Song of the Piano

A breath, the sighing
that empties the mind, prepare
to let music reign.

Hands poised like a swan
over water with calm grace.
Let the keys sing now.

Liquid moonlight floods
fingers tripping with light steps.
Let it sweep you up.

The piano sings.
It speaks softly at first but
you drown in its voice.

Fingers stroke so soft
yet so full of life and joy.
Soul etched in the notes.

Haiku is such an interesting form of poetry.  It has a rhythm of syllables: 5-7-5.  Haiku is written to evoke images, feelings, and as my thought process is almost completely in images, I can't help but love it.

After a long weekend of the Japanese-based Suzuki philosophy and piano, I decided the best way to sum it would be by combining it into my favorite mode of expression, poetry.  And what better way to acknowledge my respect and appreciation for the Suzuki method than with a haiku?

Poetry and music go hand in hand, don't you think?  I believe that poetry is as close as we can get to translating the language of music into words.

In music and poetry, we draw the emotion out from our very souls.  They're the most intimate of art forms.

Music is the language of the soul.  Words are the language of the mind.  Poetry is the link between the soul and the mind.

Do you write haiku?  What are your thoughts on poetry and music?

  1. Poetry and music are synonymous - you cannot have one without the other. They are...one and one and one again.

That being said: I never figured out Haikus. Cinquains - yes. Haiku - no.

I ADORE poetry though. AND music.

I love it!! You write so well.

      Shadow covers
      Every part of the earth.
If one should stray, the quest shall fall
      To death.
